Pretty much THE big question about this project - after the answer to "Is WB actually going to make a Justice League movie?!" was finally given - has been what the line-up would be. The Justice League has hundreds of members comprising the pool for what has been a pretty regular (but nonetheless malleable) "main" roster. And since WB didn't take the Marvel approach and give every hero their own solo movie beforehand, just who exactly would show up was pretty murky.
Until now.
Latino Review, which has been just gob-smackingly accurate in their rumor excavation - especially about DC/WB projects - has revealed the Final Five Members of the Justice League...
Here:
For the uninitiated, that would be (from left to right):
GREEN LANTERN (That's Hal Jordon pictured, but John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, and Guy Garnder are also part of the Green Lantern Corps)
WONDER WOMAN (Diana, daughter of Queen Hyppolyta of the Amazons)
SUPERMAN (Kal-El of Krypton)
BATMAN (Bruce Wayne. . . if they know what's good for 'em)
FLASH (Barry Allen originally, but Wally West took over after Allen's death, then also died, then Allen came back, and. . . yeah, comics)
In other words, not a terribly surprising team. The only alien of the bunch (Superman) is a character that's synonymous with superheroes, the "oddest" character in the group (Wonder Woman) is very well-known even outside of comics fandom, Flash is self-explanatory, Green Lantern had a (bad) movie last year, and Batman is. . . well, he's BATMAN.
Okay, so let's get this part out of the way - not including a second female member to the team seems like a missed opportunity. This entire project is basically WB playing catch-up to the juggernaut that Marvel created with The Avengers, so why stick with the same "all guys plus the token chick" concept? WB is essentially giving up free publicity and the chance to one-up Marvel in adding some more cracks to that glass ceiling. Why not use someone like Zatanna or Black Canary instead of Green Lantern? It's not like people responded all that well to the Ryan Reynolds movie, after all.
Speaking of which, if I were a betting man I'd wager hard cash that John Stewart will be the Lantern for this movie. It's an easy "win" for WB, both adding diversity to the team and separating the project from a failed movie. There's also the bonus that, thanks to Bruce Timm and company's Justice League and Justice League Unlimited from the last decade, there's a sizable portion of JL fans who already feel comfortable with Stewart being the Lantern on the team.
Now, while these are heavily-rumored to be the "main" team, there's supposedly a couple other members who might get cameos, namely Aquaman, Hawkman, and Martian Manthunter (a.k.a. J'onn J'onzz). Of the three, I think J'onn is most likely. WB's apparently trying to go very cosmic with this one - the heavy is Darkseid leading an alien invasion - and that seems like an easy fit to have the shape-shifting Martian show up.
All in all, seems like another safe, logical choice. Other than the decision to use my favorite DC heavy, I haven't been terribly excited by any of the news floating around this project. But just the thought of getting this movie the same year we get an Avengers sequel and a new Star Wars film makes me pretty giddy.
